"I think the genre an author writes in has a big impact on their storylines since as a general rule, authors write to meet their readers' expectations.

I am a romance author, and while every romance book is unique, for the most part, they follow the same general story line that readers expect:

• There’s a couple that is attracted to each other, they have problems and turmoil, but eventually they get together.

How authors make each of their stories interesting is by creating unique scenarios, details, and characters. How do they repeatedly do this?

• By drawing on things they are  familiar with.

It’s ten times easier to write or talk about a topic you have some knowledge and interesting, so that’s exactly what writers generally do.
